Why a new Connecticut carrier has to buy insurance

A newly registered interstate motor carrier cannot legally haul a load until an insurer files proof of coverage — a BMC-91 — with the FMCSA on their behalf. Until that filing exists, the authority is not active and the truck does not move. Insurance is not a decision they are weighing; it is the thing standing between them and their first paying load.

That is why timing decides everything in Connecticut. A carrier who registered last week has usually not been called yet. A carrier on a resold list from last quarter has already bought.

Fleet size: Connecticut is owner-operator territory

Of the 67 Connecticut carriers we tracked, 33 ran a single truck (49.3%), 20 ran two to five (29.9%), and 5 ran six or more (7.5%). A further 9 had not yet reported a fleet size to the federal record.

Single-truck new ventures carry the highest premium per unit in trucking — no safety history, no CSA score, no loss runs, so underwriters price for the unknown. In Connecticut that is the bulk of the market.

Where they are registering in Connecticut

Danbury (9) · Bridgeport (5) · New Britain (5).

Danbury produced the most new authorities in Connecticut over this window.

What they haul

general freight (42) · flatbed and building materials (10).

Cargo type drives both the required coverage and the premium, so it is worth filtering on before you call.

Coverage they are required to carry

$750,000 (47 carriers) · $300,000 (9 carriers) · $1,000,000 (6 carriers).

The federal minimum depends on what a carrier hauls and the weight they operate.

What is on this page, and what is not

Everything above is a count, and no count below 5 is published at all — a group of one is not a statistic, it is a carrier. This page deliberately shows no carrier names, USDOT numbers, phone numbers or addresses, and no line here corresponds to a single carrier — those details are what an agent pays for, and they are revealed only to the one agent who unlocks that lead.

If you want to see the carriers themselves, create an account. The first one is free.

About these numbers. They describe the new-authority carriers we tracked between August 20, 2026 and September 16, 2026 — US property carriers with pending or active operating authority and no insurance filing on record. They are not a count of every motor carrier registered in Connecticut, and we do not publish individual carrier records here. LeadsLockedIn is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the FMCSA or the U.S. Department of Transportation.
